The work behind the work

Melvin Gomez is a painter working from El Salvador. His practice moves between portraiture and observation, built up in layers of oil and acrylic on canvas.

Each piece begins from life or from photographic reference, then is worked slowly until the surface holds the light the way the subject did. Commissions are accepted a few at a time so that each one gets the attention it needs.

Melvin Gómez is an artist working primarily in painting. They hold a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts and Art & Design Business from Ringling College of Art and Design, and completed the International Baccalaureate in Visual Arts at United World College Red Cross Nordic, Norway. Born in the municipality of Huízucar, La Libertad, El Salvador, Melvin was selected in 2024 for an artist residency at Shawnigan Lake School, Canada. Melvin Gómez received the Trustees Academic Award 2021-2022, and in 2019 the municipality of Huízucar honored them with the distinction of Hijo Meritísimo.

Melvin Gómez is the founder of Pinceladas de Esperanza, a nonprofit art school for children and young people in the municipality of Huízucar, El Salvador.

Notable exhibitions include Shawnigan Lake School, Canada (2024); ArtExpo New York (2023); Crossley Gallery, Sarasota, Florida (2022); and Savage Gallery, Sarasota, Florida (2022).

Artist's Statement

The central theme of my work is the human condition. My aim is to represent the universal expression of human emotions, feelings and desires. My inspiration comes both from past experiences and from the emotional events I face in daily life.

I use painting as a vehicle for exploration, working the materials and textures with every brushstroke. In my work, intricate detail is balanced against loose, gestural strokes within each composition, and personal imagery finds its balance against photographic reference. My creative process helps me articulate and paint my emotional response to experiencing emotion as a human being.
